Manuela Viera-Gallo: Night Beings
Curated by Alexandra Goldman
Manuela Viera-Gallo was born during her parents’ exile in Rome, Italy. Her point of view has been strongly shaped by the social and political violence that has affected the history of most Latin American countries and by a constant state of migration. As a consequence Viera-Gallo’s work engages preoccupations, anxieties and fears derived from her own experience. Her artistic practice presents a multidisciplinary body of work that departs from absurdity to manipulate and distort known symbols and imagery into an allegorical, fantastical and darkly comical framework that allows her to take ownership of the subsequent transformation to analyze different processes of political and social instability.
Manuela Viera-Gallo’s work has addressed anti-capitalist currents and revealed the adversities of military dictatorships in South America in the 70s and 80s. In her new series of paintings she surprises and thrills with a work that focuses on her own dream imagery that recalls the strength of women, such as Leonora Carrington, Tarsila do Amaral or Remedios Varo, who revolutionized the history of art from their powerfully intimate world.
Viera-Gallo’s solo shows include Aninat Gallery, Santiago,Chile (2019), Public Sector Art Basel, Miami USA (2017), Volta Art Fair (2016), Y Gallery, New York, USA (2015), SP-ART FAIR, SAO PAOLO, Brazil (2014), La Central Gallery, Bogota, Colombia (2013), Arteba Fair- Buenos Aires, Argentina (2012), Valenzuela & Klenner Foundation, Bogota, Colombia (2007), Broadway 1602 Gallery, New York, USA (2007), Die Ecke Gallery, Santiago, Chile (2006); Rebecca Container Gallery, Genova, Italy (2005), 24/7 Gallery, East End London, UK (2002).
